Zion Afternoon, oil on board, 10×8

painting by Ben Haggett

Another painting from Zion–early afternoon, standing by a Virgin River still muddy brown from what passes for runoff in Southern Utah, the cottonwoods palely considering leaf, but still unconvinced.  I’d just done another painting that went wrong–was sort of OK but somehow a little “precious”, too fiddly, so turned 90 degrees and did this quickly, just using the paint straight from the tube, no thinners or medium.  I find when doing this that it enforces a certain directness that I like.  This one is flawed, for sure, but has a certain honesty the painting I’d just completed lacked.
